Lip Filler Myths That Need to Die Already

If I had a dollar for every time someone told me they wanted lip filler but were scared because of something they saw on TikTok, I could retire.
The internet has done amazing things for the aesthetics industry. It's also filled people's heads with some truly wild misconceptions about lip filler. So let's clear the air.
Here are the myths I hear most often — and what's actually true.
"Lip filler always looks fake"
I hear this one constantly, and I get why. The lip fillers you notice are the overdone ones. Nobody points at a woman with beautifully subtle lips and thinks "she definitely has filler." You only notice the bad work, and that creates a skewed perception.
The reality? I have clients with lip filler that their own partners didn't notice until they were told. Not because the results weren't visible — they were. But because the enhancement was so natural that it just looked like... their lips. Just better.
At Aesthetic Touch by Raya, natural is the only way I do it. If you want to look like you got filler, I'm probably not your injector. But if you want to look like you just have really nice lips? Let's talk.
"It's going to hurt SO bad"
Okay, I'm not going to lie to you and say it feels like nothing. Your lips have a lot of nerve endings, and you're going to feel something. But "SO bad"? No.
Here's what actually happens: I apply a numbing cream that sits on your lips for about 10 to 15 minutes before we start. The filler itself also has lidocaine (numbing agent) built right into it. So by the time we're actually injecting, most of what you feel is pressure and some mild pinching.
Is it a spa day? No. Is it the worst pain of your life? Not even close. Most of my clients say it was way less intense than they expected. A few have even fallen asleep. (I'm not joking.)
"My lips will stretch out when it wears off"
This might be the myth that frustrates me the most because it scares people away from something they actually want.
Lip filler — specifically hyaluronic acid filler, which is what we use — is naturally absorbed by your body over time. When it's gone, your lips go back to exactly how they were before. They don't sag. They don't stretch out. They don't look worse than they did originally.
Think of it like this: filler sits inside the tissue and eventually gets broken down and reabsorbed. It's not stretching anything. It's just temporarily adding volume. When that volume is gone, everything goes back to its starting point.
"More filler = better lips"
This is how people end up looking like they ran face-first into a beehive.
More filler does not equal better results. There's a limit to how much product your lips can handle while still looking natural. Going past that limit is how you get the "sausage lip" look, the weird shelf above the lip line, or that overstuffed appearance that screams "FILLER" from across the room.
My approach is always to start with less. We can build over time if you want more. But once your lips are overfilled, it's a much harder situation to fix. Slow and steady wins this race every time.
"All filler is the same"
Nope. There are different brands, different consistencies, and different formulations designed for different areas of the face. The filler I'd use in your lips isn't the same one I'd use in your cheeks.
And beyond the product, the injector's technique matters enormously. Two people could use the exact same filler and get totally different results based on where they place it, how deep they inject, and how much they use. The skill of the injector is at least as important as the product.
"Lip filler is permanent and I'm stuck with it"
Good news: you're not stuck with anything. Hyaluronic acid fillers (the kind used in 99% of lip treatments) can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. If for any reason you don't like your results — or you just want to go back to your natural lips — it can be undone.
That said, most filler naturally dissolves on its own within 6 to 12 months. So even if you do nothing, your lips will eventually return to their natural state.
"I'll look crazy right after"
Your lips will be swollen right after the appointment. I'm not going to sugarcoat that. They'll look bigger than the final result, and you might have a moment of "oh my god, what did I do."
Take a deep breath. This is swelling, not filler. It peaks around 24 to 48 hours and then starts going down. By day 3 to 5, most of the puffiness has calmed down. Your real results show up around the 2-week mark.
I always tell my clients: do not judge your lips for two weeks. Send me a panicked text if you need to, but do not make any decisions about how you feel until the swelling is fully gone.
"Only young people get lip filler"
This one is just plain wrong. Lips naturally lose volume as we age — they get thinner, flatter, and less defined. Lip filler is popular across every age group because it addresses different concerns at different stages.
In your 20s and 30s, you might want a little more fullness or better shape. In your 40s, 50s, and beyond, you might want to restore volume that time has taken away and bring back some definition.
At Aesthetic Touch by Raya, I see clients across all ages, and every treatment is customized. There's no age where lip filler stops making sense.
"Anyone with a needle can do lip filler"
This is the scariest myth on the list, and it's the most dangerous.
Lip injections involve navigating blood vessels, tissue layers, and delicate anatomy. An injector who doesn't fully understand lip anatomy can cause serious complications — vascular issues, severe asymmetry, lumps, or filler that migrates to places it shouldn't be.
Please, please do your research. Look at portfolios. Read reviews. Ask about training and experience. Your lips are not the place to go bargain shopping.
The Real Deal
Lip filler is safe, effective, and temporary when done by someone who knows what they're doing. The key is finding an injector who prioritizes your natural lip shape, starts conservatively, and cares more about your results than selling you extra syringes.
That's how I run things at Aesthetic Touch by Raya in Plano, TX. If you've been curious about lip filler but all these myths have been holding you back, come in for a consultation. I'll give you my honest take on what would look great on you — and if lip filler isn't the move, I'll tell you that too.
